I want to know a side of you guys that cheers you up through a shitty day(s).

When the world turns against you guys, what do you do to turn things around? First car to make things better? Parts to make things better? Other than cars what do you do other than cars to turn your shitbox day/moments into a glorified day?

This isn't some type of rant or plea of help. It's just one of those times where a constant race doesn't seem to go as planned. With people lost in my family and a reoccurring trail of sensitive blame, I can't fathom this through. I shut the world by sketching and tag (graffiti) and especially the automotive world. That's why I get into cars. That's why I bought my first car; a car that I've loved when I was a child:

Personally I find something I love doing, and just try to forget the rest of the world for a little bit. Whether it's going for a drive, working on a car, playing a video game, or anything else, just try and escape for a little while.

Someone very close to me also suffers from depression, and I've witnessed first hand how it can be a whole lot worse than people think. Never be afraid to ask for help, and don't act like it's not a big deal.

I remember a few years back when I was in high school. I am pretty sure I had depression from 10th grade all the way up to the second year of college. Nearly 3 years, it was terrible. Now how did I cheer myself up? Well it was always car related things. Shows, races, events. If you have a car, go for a nice drive down some roads. It is the best release I have found(besides actually outright racing).

Also, exhaust noises. The loudest video, no regrets!!!

None car related stuff? Not much really, I like to play video games a lot more. Maybe watch my favorite movie or something.

The goodwood revival is always good for a bad day.

This Senna thing might make you cry, but sometimes that helps. Seriously.

Aaaaaaaaand Venture brothers.

As a psychology student who is no way qualified to diagnose someone I'd recommend seeing a doctor about getting some anti depressants. Many people suffer from SAD (seasonal affective depression) during the winter months. It's mostly caused by the lack of sunlight not giving your body the right amount of vitamins to release Ceretonin (I think that's how it's spelled) which is the stuff that makes you happy. Anti-depressants most of the time can make up the difference. Also Anti-depressants aren't mind control devices, you're still going to have days that you'll be in shitty moods. What they'll really do is allow you to think through what's making you feel shitty more clearly without constantly feeling like shit when you think about it.

Also anti-depressants don't do the job alone. Think of them as the first gear in a transmission, they help you get going but it's up to you to shift past that. Hobbies are a great form of therapy weather it's working on your car, painting, or whatever it gives you more of a sense of control in your life.

Exercise is another great form of therapy! There's a reason why people who work out regularly tend to be more confident and that's because not only does it make you look more attractive but also because exercise releases more ceretonin into the brain. I love to ride my bike because although my body might feel like shit after a particularly grueling session I feel wonderful afterwards! Also when it's a particularly pretty day you notice all sorts of cool stuff that you normally miss when you're in a car doing 60MPH.

This is just my advice but I hope that it helps. If you need anything you know that we got you back man and we're cheering you on!

Yeah I had depression through most of high school. I found that a nice hard drive would always help.

My car is a fantastic friend. Give it a little maintenance and it'll give you smiles on demand.

Going for a drive and put on my 'feel good' playlist. Works for me every time. This is from finals a month or so ago, the last time life really got to me. Took a hour out of my night to really focus on something I love and all was well.

Kinja'd!!!

Really I just think its a matter of getting your mind off whats going wrong and to realize life isn't completely shitty. Wether you're driving or tagging something.

I know what you are going through. Well, that's not true, everyone differs. But I definitely get the general idea. I went for years denying and bullshitting myself into thinking I could figure it out myself. Right up to about a month ago where I realized I really can't.
I'm working on it now and reaching out for help. All I can say is do the same, don't let it go too far and end like me on a far longer path with a burnout (Not the cool ones they do in Australia) and severe depression.

As far as cheering up: Go see car events. Visit your local track on racedays and enjoy the atmosphere, sights and smells.

What cheers me up as well is watching the roadkill guys on youtube just fuck around and have a great time.

I've loved cars since i've been little yet never had the chance (read: finances. Getting your license over here is ridiculously expensive) to own and drive a car. But you seem to ahve one, go work on it, take it out for a spin. Nighttime drives are great for pondering and epiphanies.

Finding a hobby really helps too. For me it´s photography, something that mixes really well with cars too.

If you ever want to talk, let me know, I ´ll/we´ll figure out a way to have a private chat. Sometimes talking to somebody you don't really know is easier.

Oppo is one of the friendliest communities out there with some of the most honest, diverse and amazing people in the world, all bonded by their love for cars.

If you need a talk or a listening ear, just give me a shout.

For me, just knowing what depression is, and being honest with myself, helps a lot. There's depressive thinking, and actually being depressed, not that they're unconnected of course.

Being able to stand back, slap myself upside the head, and say 'that's just stupid depressive thinking, stop being an idiot' when I realise I'm wallowing in self-pity is the best medicine, but of course the nature of depression is that when you're really depressed that's a hard thing to do.

For what it's worth, and this definitely is not mainstream psychology, I'd say that mostly people get depressed when they subconsciously want to be depressed. Just as suicide attempts are usually 'cries for help', so getting depressed and letting it get worse and worse can be a way of putting yourself in a position where people realise you have problems and help you with them. If you then get to the stage where you get treatment, and go through counselling, the main aim will be to deal with the root problems. If you're alert to this, you can skip the depression and the counselling and go straight to dealing with the problems.

Sitting yourself down and talking things over in your head - being careful not to allow the silly depressive thoughts free reign - can be all you need if you catch things early. But there are also pills, counselling, and so-on, and they make it a lot easier to recognise the bad thought patterns once you're at the stage where they take over.

At the end of the day, depression is just an illness, like pneumonia or whatever, except it's to do with your neurochemistry. Just like if you think you might be getting ill with pneumonia, you should go and discuss your symptoms with your doctor.

Music. I just put on something with rhythmic percussion ( I used to be a drummer) and get lost in the complexity (or sometimes the simplicity) of the beat. I can't wrench when I am in a bad mood because the wrench tends to end up in a wall.

Never had a depressed day in my life. When things are going all wrong, no matter what, I simply go do something that I know is pleasurable. Read Oppo, ride motorcycle, go 4 wheeling in my truck in the mountains or wilderness. It will pass, you just have to divert your attention to better things.

Remember May flowers always follow April showers. Whatever is going on now will pass, and things will get better. What may help is listening to happy music and avoiding depressing music.

I can't say I have ahad depression, but on rough days I look at details around me. Sometimes it is a curve of a car, but it can be the intricacies of a leaf, the color of the sky. There is a lot of beauty out here.

Change can help clear the head. Go outside, go see a friend you haven't seen in a while, take a drive to a nearby wilderness area, take a different route home after work/school, buy a different brand of orange juice, etc etc - you get the picture.

And if you're really feeling down and can't get back up, please see your doctor. Talk to him/her and ask lots of questions. If you feel that you're not being taken seriously, go see a different doctor or ask for a referral. Don't let get depression get the better of you.

And I just thought of some lines from a song that are especially relevant:

I've heard it said that this too shall pass
Good times or bad times, neither one lasts

- Behind the Clouds by Brad Paisley, Disney Cars soundtrack

Oh, and as Alex mentioned, exercise. Super important! Go to the gym, ride a bike, or just walk around town until you're exhausted, it doesn't matter, but get out there and get moving.
